| Gay York Region is pleased to announce the launch of two new initiatives, aimed at increasing awareness of York Region's LGBT-related services and organizations.
Whilst the region's LGBT resources are already well represented on the internet, it has become increasingly evident that a significant proportion of the region's LGBT residents, and probably the majority, remain unaware of their existence. Instead they are convinced that all things LGBT exist only in Toronto.
This problem stems largely from the fact that many gay and lesbian residents of the region are reluctant to access gay related websites, including GayYorkRegion.com. They fear that they might leave tracks on a home computer shared by other family members to whom they do not wish to reveal their sexuality.
Consequently, a new GayYorkRegion.com pamphlet has been published outlining all key LGBT services and organizations in the region. This, the first pamphlet of this kind ever to be produced, is currently being distributed around the region. It will soon be widely available at the offices of many community organizations and also at all public libraries.
Our second initiative is the launch of a toll-free LGBT information and support line, again a first for York Region. The new service on 1-888-YORKLGBT offers information on key services and the ability to access many of them directly. In addition, it provides an anonymous and confidential support hotline which will be manned during specific periods each week.
