| Below, the York Regional Police press release for this event:
YORK REGIONAL POLICE COMMEMORATES THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION
On Saturday, March 28, 2009, York Regional Police, in partnership with the community, will host its annual community commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The event will take place at Bur Oak Secondary School, located at 933 Bur Oak Avenue in the Town of Markham, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. This year’s theme is Celebrating our Differences, United by our Diversity.
Merella Fernandez of City TV will be the Master of Ceremonies at the event, which will also feature community booths, guest speakers and a diverse mosaic of performances in the form of music, dance, poetry and song from the many community partners who reflect our region’s cultural diversity. This event provides an opportunity for our community partners to join with us in celebration of our diversity and to collectively re-affirm our commitment to the eradication of racial discrimination. York Region Public and Catholic school students will show off their creative side through the Elimination of Racial Discrimination poster contest and their efforts will be on display.
This year the National Anthem will be sung by Jasmine Elaine Ragual, a 12-year-old Grade 7 student at Cardinal Newman Catholic School in Brampton. Jasmine was the 2008 Junior Champion of the Canadian National Exhibition Rising Star Search, the 2008 Best Child Female Solo Performer at the USA World Showcase Talent Competition in Las Vegas and was bestowed the 2008 Arts Acclaim Award by the City of Brampton.
Dignitaries in attendance will include York Regional Police Chief Armand La Barge, as well as the Honourable Lois Brown, Member of Parliament for Aurora-Newmarket, the Honourable John McCallum, Member of Parliament for Markham-Unionville, Mayor of the Town of Richmond Hill, David Barrow, Deputy Mayor for the Town of Richmond Hill, Brenda Hogg, Deputy Mayor for the Town of Markham, Jack Heath, Directors of Education Susan La Rosa from the York Catholic District School Board and Bill Hogarth from the York Region District School Board and Dr. Herbert Carnegie, recipient of the Order of Canada and Honourary Chief of York Regional Police.
In 1966, the United Nations declared March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The declaration was intended to increase awareness around the issues of racism and discrimination. Canada became one of the first countries to formally recognize the declaration when it proclaimed the day in 1989.
“As Canadians we have shown the world that despite our many differences in language, culture and religion, we can live together in peace and harmony,” said Chief La Barge. "Diversity has become one of our greatest assets here in York Region. York Regional Police acknowledges that fact by commemorating
the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination each year since 2002. We are encouraging citizens from all communities to join us as we celebrate the multicultural and inclusive character of our region.”
Admission is free and all are welcome. For more information, contact the York Regional Police Diversity and Cultural Resources Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6028, or by email at 5665@yrp.ca.
