My partner and I have been living in Aurora for over a year now and we are trying to meet people in the area as most of our friends are in toronto.

We still refuse to believe that we have to drive to Toronto every time we are looking for social interaction with other lesbians. In our early thirties, we no longer have the desire to spend two hours on the road (roundtrip) for a 2-hour mingling event. When you throw in the fact that one of us would also not be able to consume alcohol as we would have to drive back, it just sucks the fun right out of driving into toronto. The weather is also deteriorating with every passing day, which is another deterrent.

I am just wondering if ther's any place around Aurora/Newmarket where one might go for something resembling a 'night scene' and be around other gay/lesbian folks?

The Gay York Region social group (GYRSG) meets monthly in Newmarket - on the second Monday of each month (and also in Richmond Hill on the last Thursday of each month). The next scheduled date for Newmarket is December 8th.

Typically, our events are attended by anything between 4 and 16 people, but this time of year tends to be the quietest.

Presently event venue details are only circulated to GYRSG members so, to obtain further details, you'd need to visit www.gyrsg.com and register as a member. (Membership is free.)

Hi there, myself and my partner are in the same boat when it comes to friendship in Aurora, like you's, most of our friends are in T.O. and surrounding areas, but no one in our area as of yet. We would like to meet other lesbians to hang out with, if you's are up to it, drop us a line, or look up my name on G/Canada

There are any number of answers as to why there is so little with regards of finding any outlets for social attendance in the GTA.

1. Toronto is so close and FAR more diverse than the general GTA and york region. It has more diverse social gatherings, a greater ability to do immediate networking, and simply is THE center for youth to mix.

2. To piggyback on point 1, most of what LGBTI [and prodomimently gay and bisexual] socialization is done ALOT over the internet. It's provides as much interaction but in a far safer way that being a direct contact to somebody you meet or talk to. I's rather convenient and anaonymous.

3. Because much of this has to do with sexuality, the issues could be highly fo sexual empowerment and experiemntation. I doubt that most focus groups and public groups tend to have a sexuality based agenda or theme. [IE: hooking up] for anybody.

4. The plain fact that so many socials are often very small, doesn't draw much attraction from those wanting to mix and yack it up. Sadly, I find this very much so in newmarket, Aurora, and Richmondhill. toronto doesn't have this simply because it has a gay central and more readily available access to LGBTI lifestyle socials and functions/businesses.

There's so much more and the GTA and york region now sit at over 1 million people! How no large social businesses, clubs, bars, events, happen is rather disconcerning because so many go to the city to get a FIX on being LGBTI, but must commute. I have to simply cause there's nothing that catches my eye in my town of newmarket or my area. Also these things are not super well known and actually seeing it out there, advertised...is hard to find, nigh imposible at times. This is probably why the GLAYR organization went belly-up early this decade.
